APRA is an independent statutory authority that supervises institutions across banking, insurance, and superannuation, and is accountable to the Australian Parliament. Prudential regulation is concerned with maintaining the safety and soundness of financial institutions, so that the community can have confidence that they will meet their financial commitments under all reasonable circumstances.

Chair

The Government is seeking applications for the role of the full-time Chair (and member) of APRA. The Chair is a statutory officer, responsible for leading the strategy and work of APRA in banking, insurance and superannuation. Leading approximately eight hundred staff and supported by an Executive Group comprising three other Members, the APRA Chair exercises the powers and functions of APRA as established under the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority Act 1998. The Chair is also the accountable authority under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, responsible for directing and managing APRA’s delivery on its purpose and obligations.

The Chair will demonstrate high level leadership and vision; be able to manage complex operations; work with others to meet objectives; have a high level of judgment; and demonstrate a high standard of professional and personal integrity as well as the capacity to promote these in an organisation.

The Chair will also have extensive experience and knowledge of the financial system, prudential regulation and the role of APRA; as well as an outstanding record of achievement in a relevant field combined with knowledge of, or experience in, banking, insurance, superannuation, management, regulation and/or government.

The Chair position is a statutory appointment for a period of up to five years, and is situated in Sydney.

Members

The Government is also seeking applications to build a merit list for future opportunities to fill full-time Member roles that could become available in 2022 or 2023. Members support the APRA Chair in exercising the functions and powers of APRA as established under the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority Act 1998; and in leading the strategy and work of APRA in banking, insurance and superannuation. As well as collective responsibility for the goals, priorities and strategies of APRA as a whole, Members each take lead responsibility for the oversight of certain aspects of APRA’s operations. A Member may also be appointed as Deputy Chair.

APRA Members will demonstrate the ability to shape strategic thinking; achieve results; cultivate productive working relationships; communicate with influence; and exemplify personal drive and integrity.

APRA Members will also have extensive experience and knowledge of the financial system, prudential regulation and the role of APRA; as well as an outstanding record of achievement in a relevant field combined with experience in senior-level roles in the financial services industry, regulation and/or government.

Member positions are statutory appointments for a period of up to five years, and are situated in Sydney.
