About the Australian Government Actuary

The office of the Australian Government Actuary (AGA) sits within the Australian Treasury and provides consulting actuarial services and related policy advice to the Australian Government and its agencies.

The AGA advises over 40 government agencies covering a diverse range of technical and policy contexts including:

  • Investment approach & welfare systems;
  • Military superannuation and employee benefits;
  • Retirement incomes;
  • Medical indemnity insurance;
  • life and general insurance;
  • Higher education funding, and;
  • Financial reporting.

About the role

Due to increasing demands of the office of the AGA, an exciting opportunity is available for a qualified Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries or experienced statistical / data scientist with progress towards professional actuarial qualifications, strong modelling, project management, client relationship and leaderships skills at EL2 level.

This role will be responsible for driving actuarial advice in the development of the investment approach as it is applied to the Department of Social Services; developing relationships with senior leadership at key departments to ensure the effective application of the advice provided; and leading the technical work and client relationships on other major projects with large Government agencies.

In this role you will provide leadership and direction to department staff in the design, development and application of tools that support the actuarial analysis of key programs. You will provide professional actuarial and policy advice in key technical areas and lead the development of innovative actuarial solutions in highly complex areas.

Managing and developing client relationships will be critical to the success of the role, as will developing the work program for a team of actuarial analysts to ensure delivery of a key program of work and developing staff.

Our Ideal candidate

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate experience delivering authoritative, insightful and practical actuarial advice to a diverse range of public sector clients.

The successful applicant will have:

  • well-developed consulting skills;
  • a capacity to contribute to broader strategies and initiatives;
  • experience in the actuarial analysis of public sector programs;
  • strong conceptual and analytical skills including the application of micro simulation and machine learning in actuarial or related fields; and
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Applicants will be Fellows of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and/or demonstrate exceptional experience in related statistical areas. You will have a track record of successfully providing advice, developing and growing long term client relationships. The ability to apply actuarial principles to the issues facing the public sector is essential.

This role is based in Canberra and applicants must be willing and eligible to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance.

Employees of the Treasury are required to be Australian citizens and must hold a current security clearance or successfully complete a clearance prior to commencement.
