Treasury is looking for talented, team-orientated, and highly motivated individuals to fill three Assistant Director positions in its Macroeconomic Analysis and Policy Division. The division contributes to the development of sound government policy through thorough forward-looking economic analysis and policy research. The roles are in the Fiscal Policy Analysis Unit, Fiscal Policy Strategy Unit, and Financial Markets Unit.

About the roles

The successful applicants will need to:

  • draw on and develop economic, financial market and public policy frameworks and models to provide expert advice and solve complex problems;
  • communicate complex issues in a compelling manner to a variety of audiences;
  • develop and manage a range of stakeholder relationships, and establish and maintain internal and external networks;
  • build team capability through coaching others, providing performance feedback, conflict resolution and encouraging career development;
  • recommend strategic directions for the unit, and effectively manage competing priorities and strategic directions when achieving outcomes; and
  • act as the Director of the unit on occasion.

Fiscal Policy Strategy Unit position:

  • The successful applicant will provide expert advice on fiscal policy and the Government’s fiscal strategy, including on the near-term stance of fiscal policy (taking account of economic and fiscal conditions) and public debt management.
  • The role will involve the development, maintenance and use of macroeconomic modelling for policy analysis.
  • The successful applicant will work collaboratively with the Director of the unit to build team capability and deliver on team outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and use of structural vector autoregression models and/or dynamic stochastic general equilibrium models (either representative or heterogeneous agent) for policy analysis is highly desirable.

Fiscal Policy Analysis Unit position:

  • The successful applicant will provide expert advice on the macroeconomic effects (including on activity, employment and welfare) of individual fiscal policy measures designed to improve allocative efficiency and/or promote macroeconomic stability.
  • The role will involve development, maintenance and use of macroeconomic modelling for policy analysis, including use of Treasury’s Overlapping Generations Model of Australia.
  • The successful applicant will work collaboratively with the Director of the unit to build team capability and deliver on team outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and use of dynamic general equilibrium models and/or structural vector autoregression models for policy analysis is highly desirable.

Financial Markets Unit position:

  • The successful applicant will provide expert advice on financial market developments and conditions and their implications for macroeconomic policy.
  • The role will involve the development and application of financial market, macroeconomic and public policy frameworks to provide public policy advice.
  • The successful applicant will work collaboratively with the Director of the unit to build team capability and deliver on team outcomes. 
  • Demonstrated experience in financial market and macroeconomic analysis is highly desirable.

Desirable Qualifications / Experience

  • Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant field, including, but not limited to, economics, finance, business, or public policy.
  • Ideally, at least five years’ relevant work experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following will be particularly well-regarded:
    • Government policy development and analysis
    • Relevant private sector experience

Eligibility

Employees of the Treasury are required to be Australian citizens and must hold a current security clearance or successfully complete a clearance prior to commencement.
