The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is the Australian Government’s principal revenue collection agency and administers Australia’s tax system and significant aspects of Australia’s superannuation system. It administers legislation governing tax, superannuation and the Australian Business Register and supports the delivery of government benefits to the community.

As Second Commissioner of Taxation, you will be a member of the ATO Executive leadership team driving significant 2024 transformational change. Specific responsibilities include:

  • ensuring that the ATO achieves its purpose of contributing to the economic and social well-being of Australians by fostering willing participation in the tax and superannuation systems

  • leading the Law Design and Practice Group of the ATO including Policy, Analysis and Legislation, Review and Dispute Resolution and our Tax Counsel Network divisions

  • developing and implementing strategies to deliver the ATO vision by making tax fair, simple and understood

  • developing, influencing and improving the design of tax and super systems of the future

  • taking a prominent role in a range of Senate and House of Representative committees

  • engaging with stakeholders across government, particularly across the Treasury portfolio, bringing together diverse perspectives

  • representing the ATO in the media across a broad range of tax law related matters.

Our ideal candidate:

  • has a deep understanding of tax and superannuation law, policy and administration

  • excels at interpreting and applying the law to deliver fair, consistent and appropriate outcomes with a whole-of-system focus

  • has significant experience working with high level stakeholders, including the ability to develop relationships with public and private sector senior executives and influence and drive key issues

  • has strong leadership experience – in order to help set the strategic vision of the organisation, as well as leading by example to inspire and motivate the team

  • has a strong track record of achieving results within the context of organisational and/ or government policy

  • has an outstanding record of achievement in the field of taxation law.

The successful candidate will also require a high level of judgement and the ability to demonstrate evidence of working to the highest levels of professional and personal standards, coupled with personal integrity.
