About the Royal Australian Mint

The Royal Australian Mint is an agency within the Commonwealth Treasury portfolio operating under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.

The Mint is the sole supplier of Australia’s circulating coins. It was established in Canberra in 1965, one year prior to Australia’s changeover to decimal currency.

The Mint also produces a range of high quality collector coins (numismatic coins) which are sold through an extensive online and mail order operation, a network of domestic and international coin dealers, and the Mint Shop. In addition, the Mint produces a number of Australian medals and awards, as well as tokens, medallions and jewellery items. The Mint has also produced circulating and collector coins for a number of other countries.

The Mint is committed to upholding its reputation as one of the leading producers of quality coins in the world and to achieving business excellence.

The Mint is a major Canberra tourist attraction with a public gallery and shop that attracted over 330,000 visitors in the 2016-2017 financial year.

The Mint is also the custodian of Australia’s National Coin Collection which is valued at over $21.8 million.

Management Framework

The Mint’s governance framework includes an Advisory Board, Senior Management Team and Audit Committee. The Mint Advisory Board provides strategic advice on corporate strategy and governance practices, and guidance to the Mint’s senior management team. The Audit Committee provides independent assurance on the Mint’s risk, control and compliance framework, legislative obligations and its external accountability responsibilities.

Reporting to the CEO, are senior managers covering activities across Production, Finance & Logistics, Business Development & Facilities, Marketing, Systems & Process Management, Tooling, Coining & Quality, Engineering Services and Corporate.  These managers constitute the Senior Management Team.  Under the leadership of the CEO, the Senior Management Team is responsible for setting the strategic and business objectives of the Mint, and reaching decisions on issues affecting the Mint’s business.

The CEO of the Mint reports to the Secretary of the Treasury.

About the Role

The Chief Executive Officer:

  • heads the Mint and is responsible for the overall operation of the Mint, including financial management, administration, manufacturing, security and marketing activities;
  • is responsible for the managing the affairs of the Mint in a way that promotes the efficient, effective and ethical use of Commonwealth resources, which includes compliance with applicable laws and Australian Government policy;
  • is responsible in the maintenance of an appropriate risk management framework and related strategies;
  • develops and implements strategic and operational plans for the Royal Australian Mint;
  • provides annual and ad hoc reports and advice on coinage as required by the Government;
  • represents the Mint’s interests with Ministers, external stakeholders, the media and on the Mint Advisory Board.
